INDIAN INSTITUTES OF SCIENCE EDUCATION & RESEARCH (IISERs): Autonomous Institutions under MHRD, Govt of India
Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) are a group of premier public research institutions in India. The institutes were established by the Government of India through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to provide quality collegiate education in basic sciences coupled with cutting-edge research at the undergraduate level.
The IISER institutes were formally established by the Parliament of India through the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research.
Seven IISERs have been established across the country, namely IISER Kolkata (West Bengal), IISER Pune (Maharashtra), IISER Mohali(Punjab), IISER Bhopal(Madhya Pradesh), IISER Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), IISER Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), and IISER Berhampur in Odisha.
All IISERs were declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Parliament of India in 2012, to promote them as leading institutions in the country in the field of basic sciences. The financial outlay for each IISER is around ₹5 billion for the first five years of establishment.

Academics and admission in IISER: Eligibility Criteria to Apply for IISER Admission
As of October 2018, IISERs admit 1325 students in total each year for their dual degree BS-MS Program. For each channel of admission below, additional cut-off criteria of respective IISERs are applicable. Candidates satisfying any of the following criteria are eligible for applying:
KVPY channel: Candidates having a valid KVPY fellowship.
JEE (Advanced) channel: Candidates in General category securing a rank within 10000 in the Common Rank List (CRL) of the JEE Advanced are eligible to apply.
For candidates belonging to reserved category (OBC Non-Creamy Layer, SC, ST, Persons with Disability (PD)), their category rank should be within 10000. Additionally, for admission to the 4-year BS program in Engineering Sciences at IISER Bhopal, candidates must have secured 75% marks (GEN/EWS/OBC-NCL) or 65% marks (SC/ST/PwD) in their Class XII (or equivalent) exams.
State and Central Boards (SCB) Channel: Candidates who have passed (10+2) level with science stream with marks equal to or above the cut off percentage in their respective boards as decided and declared by IISER are eligible to apply for the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT).
Candidates applying through SCB channel will have to appear in the IAT. On the basis of the cut-off marks of IAT for each IISER (which are kept strictly confidential, candidates are allotted IISERs by the Joint Admissions Committee (JAC) through a common admissions portal.
